A Gift of a Fishpond

Fishponds are a swimmingly good idea!

Fishponds are one of the many family empowerment programs used in Village Development by Sustainable Cambodia. When families put in a fishpond, the investment keeps on multiplying, just like the fish who swim in it! The family gets the opportunity to establish their very own fishpond. And the village families later become donors themselves when they contribute starter-fish to another nearby village. So the gift continues. Fishponds are sometimes done at the village level, too, where all the village families help to construct a community-owned fishpond, and each family receives “fingerlings” from the community pond. They establish their own small family pond with the fingerlings, and in a few weeks when the fish have grown and multiplied, the family gives back to the community pond.

Fishponds are one of the most important tools we can use to eliminate health and hunger problems in impoverished villages. Lack of protein is a primary cause of malnutrition in rural Cambodian families, and is also the cause of some neurological, skin and digestive diseases.

Like all Village Gifts through Sustainable Cambodia, this gift will be pooled and used to support the empowerment-based Community Development programs. These programs become self-sustaining through the pass-on process, through which this gift will continue for years to come. Because Sustainable Cambodia operates on under 5% admin & fundraising costs, and those costs are provided by the founders and directors, every penny of this contribution will be used directly in the villages. And all this empowerment begins with this gift of fish!
