A Gift of a Pig

A gift of a pig squeals of benefits!

For rural Cambodians, raising pigs is a major factor in economic development. Female pigs typically average between 8 and 12 piglets in a litter. A family receiving a breeding pig enters into a contract with the village that they will pass on breeding pigs to at least two other village families, and each of those families promises to do the same... so the gift continues to grow, and more and more families become empowered.

Piglets grow quickly, eating scraps from the rice fields and remnants from the vegetable gardens. The families are taught how to make pig-pen bedding material out of remnant rice husks - a little used byproduct of the rice harvest. The rice husks virtually eliminate odor, and the combination of rice husks and pig manure makes excellent fertilizer for vegetable gardens. Within a period of half a year the pigs have tripled in value, providing life-changing income to the family. And as the gift is passed on to other village families, hunger can be eliminated and more families empowered. And it all starts with your gift of a happy pig!
