An impressive thing about Cambodian children is their ability to have fun." writes Volunteer Derek Van Berkel. "They need not be entertained. Rather, they find pleasure in the simplest of games and activities. Playing with Cambodian children is really an invigorating and reenergizing practice. I found myself with greater energy and life zeal as a result of their youthful exuberance.
Our village children also share a wonderful sense of responsibility. Derek continues, "The most striking thing one notices about Cambodian children is their work ethic. Children get up very early, around 5:30 or 6:00, and go for a shower in the river. They are very self sufficient and most wash themselves and clean their clothes on their own. You see a real community among all children as each one helps each other out with these duties.
